Texting is becoming the #1 form of communication

When a Florida teen was arrested for savagely beating an eighth-grade girl, he said that rude text messages she'd sent him sparked his rage. This tragic incident mirrors similar stories in which teens' texting becomes hostile.

Cruelty is nothing new. But the anonymity of texting (in fact, the two teens involved in the Florida incident didn't know each other) fosters an environment where kids can say anything. Kids' actions seem detached from the consequences.  And let's face it, teens' judgement and impulse control are not yet fully developed. The hostile exchanges, combined with instantaneous communication, can be very destructive.

Billions of text messages are sent every year from our kids' mobile phones. While most kids use messaging responsibly, it's still a powerful and extremely private communication tool that needs to be used responsibly. (For tips on how to text message) www.texted.mobi

Why understanding texting is important

Texting is totally portable, private, and immediate. Kids can send messages to anyone from anywhere at anytime. In other words, they have no boundaries unless we help them to establish some. Almost no research has been done on the impact of immediate communication on our kids' social development.

But the instant gratification factor of getting instantaneous responses from friends has to have some affect. Any parent who has been at the dinner table or on a hike with a child only to have their pockets buzz with an incoming message knows that texts take your kids out of the moment they are in and connect them to distant friends.

Texts can be used to keep friends close, help parents figure out family logistics, and offer a wonderful way to share experiences. But as with any powerful tool, texting can also be used to bully or humiliate people. An embarrassing or upsetting image or video can quickly be transmitted or uploaded to on online video sharing site like YouTube. Sexting is a form of texting where kids  Kids have to know that the abusing the privilege of texting will have consequences. And sadly, the use of texting in school cheating is on the rise as answers can be swiftly passed from student to student.

Parent Tips

  • Carefully evaluate whether or not your kids need texting on their cellphones. Just because other kids in their class have it doesn't mean your child needs it.
  • If  your kids do text, get an unlimited texting plan. Otherwise the charges mount up swiftly.
  • Make rules around when and where. No texting during meals, during class, on family outings. Oh, and turn the phone OFF at night!
  • Establish consequences for misuse. Cheating, inappropriate messages, sexual communication. These are all no-go's. Want to make your point? Take a kid's phone away for a week.
  • Watch your own behavior. Parents are still kids' playbooks for right and wrong. If you text your kid during class and then turn around and tell that child that he or she can't do that, we send mixed messages.
  • If you suspect your kids aren't texting appropriately, you can always look at their messages. Yes, it feels like snooping, but our first job as parents is to ensure our kids use powerful technologies safely and responsibly.

Lift Putter Titleist Scotty Cameron Studio Select Newport 2 Putter--Making You Feel Like The Best Golfer The Studio Select line is the result of Scotty Cameron's golf club Putter research and their drive to create a putter collection with the finest technical performance and incredible overall feel. The precision milled 303 Stainless Steel Newport putters feature an improved high toe profile and heel and toe circular sole weights that allow for numerous length options in each model. The circular heel-toe weights provide amplified stability by reducing head rotation on off-centre impacts for a larger sweet spot. The factory adjustable weights are set to provide the proper headweight-to-shaft length combination. The improved high toe profile of the Studio Select Putters feature a stepless shaft for a clean look and offer a soft but solid feel and are equipped a new Scotty Cameron red cord grip. Design Tour proven Newport-style putters with bold red graphics, high toe profile, and heel & toe circular weights. This is the golf club I most enjoy taking out of the bag. The balance, feel and looks instill confidence. Same basic design as my ols ping anser but much better feel. Awesome putter. Amazing looking putter. better than the child like doodles of the studio design. perfectly weighted, feels so solid. everything about this putter gives you confidence from any distance. always when you change a club in your bag it takes time to get used to but its SO worth it. i look forward to getting to the green just to get it out the bag again. it makes you feel like a real golfer! Good feel on center-hit putts. felt i was lifting the head up too much so added lead tape (ultimately 3 layers). now has good weight through the stroke. won pro shop credit in outing, so no out of pocket cost, so 5 stars on value for me, otherwise, ouch, not worth cost. It is indeed a better way to have the golf clubs with a lower price and better control. At the web site http://www.Liftputters.com they supply with customers golf clubs of golf wholesale method.   QUESTION: I’m sure you’ve been asked this before, but I need to know. What is the past tense of “to text”? And if it has not been officially decided, who decides when new words are part of the dictionary? This certainly needs to be addressed. Thanks. Sincerely, Brett Favre/Jenn Sterger RESPONSE: The verb “text” is conjugated according to the normal English pattern, so the past tense would be “I texted.” Here at Merriam-Webster, we have a series of criteria that a word has to meet to be considered for entry in our dictionary. We spend a certain amount of time every day scouring all sorts of published material for examples of new words, and when we find them, they go into our citation database. When we revise our dictionary, we check the database to see if any of these new words have enough support to warrant their entry. For more information on the process and criteria we use to enter words in the dictionary, please visit our Web site at http://www.merriam-webster.com/help/faq/words_in.htm.   The mounting shadow inventory will cause further erosion for years to come for US housing prices, which are already suffering from depressed demand. Delays in servicing distressed properties are adding to a cumulative supply of unsold homes that is 3 times the normal level. Shadow inventory continues to climb, and there is now an eight-months supply of these homes, according to CoreLogic (CLGX: 18.52 +0.49%). The data analytics firm said the number of homes seriously delinquent, in foreclosure or REO and not on multiple listing services rose to 2.1 million units as of August, up from 1.9 million, or a five-month supply, a year earlier. "The weak demand for housing is significantly increasing the risk of further price declines in the housing market," CoreLogic chief economist Mark Fleming said. "This is being exacerbated by a significant and growing shadow inventory that is likely to persist for some time due to the highly extended time-to-liquidation that servicers are currently experiencing." The visible inventory of new and existing homes through August remained flat with the year ago at 4.2 million units and is now at 15 months of supply, CoreLogic said. But the increased shadow inventory boosted the total supply of unsold homes by 3% to 6.3 million or 23 months from 6.1 million or 17 months. "Although it can vary and it depends on the market and real estate cycle, typically a reading of six to seven months is considered normal so the current total months’ supply is roughly three times the normal rate," according to CoreLogic. The company said Florida, California and Michigan continue to have the highest ratio of delinquent properties to sales, and Texas, "which largely bypassed the housing boom and subsequent bust," has the lowest distressed supply. Earlier in November, Altos Research said the impact of shadow inventory looms large on the housing market. The firm reported steep declines in housing prices in the areas hit hardest by the bubble burst of three years ago, while Amherst Securities said default rates rose for the first time this year in October. In September, Standard & Poor's said shadow inventory represents one-third of the nonagency residential mortgage-backed securities market and will negatively pressure housing prices until the backlog clears in more than three years' time. Analysts expect it to take 40 months to work through the inventory of mortgages. ========================================= What does this mean for you? There's never been a better time to begin investing in foreclosures. Properties are selling for much cheaper prices right now, which will allow you to begin investing for pennies on the dollar! You definitely need to position yourself as the best real estate investor you can be by keeping up with the current market - supply and demand, pricing, guideline changes, etc. Investing begins now for huge paydays tomorrow!   Club Navigo Problems From VP said...
December 26, 2010 @ 4:05:04 PM EST

Dear Veronica Krol, I am the Vice President of Club Navigo Operations and I would like to express my regret that you have been experiencing difficulties booking reservations. While I do not have the specifics of your account, I think I may understand the situation based on your complaint. My guess is that you purchased a timeshare from the Grand Seas Resort in Daytona Beach, Florida, and with that purchase you received a membership in Club Navigo. Every year, you receive an invoice from your home resort, the Grand Seas Resort, for your annual maintenance, taxes and Club Navigo dues assessments. The Grand Seas Resort then remits the Club Navigo dues back to us and your membership is renewed. After the Grand Seas Resort filed bankruptcy in 2009, they have not remitted the Club Navigo dues that you paid to Club Navigo to renew your membership. The situation is a little like the stories you hear in the news where renters are paying their landlords but the landlord doesn't pay the mortgage so the renter is evicted. In this case, eviction is not the end result but your membership in Club Navigo is not renewed. This is a very unfortunate situation for owners. On a positive note, there are a couple of things you can do. First, if you wish to return to your home resort, you can contact them directly and they should book a reservation for you. You own at the resort, after all, and you have paid your annual assessments, I assume. Therefore, you are entitled to a reservation at your resort. Second, if you wish to utilize your Club Navigo membership benefits (e.g., making a reservation at other Club Navigo resorts, using Interval International to make an exchange, etc.), we are working with individual members to make that happen. I would be happy to assist you if you would like to contact me directly. Again, I regret that you have had an unfortunate experience recently but welcome the opportunity to help you make the most of your Club Navigo membership. Best regards, Karen Kraftchick

Timeshare Sellers Info said... December 27, 2010 @ 2:59:48 AM EST Resell Timeshare Reselling Timeshare – The Timeshare Resellers FAQ If you are ready to resell your timeshare the last thing you need is a long, stressful process. Read through these frequently asked questions to see how easy reselling timeshare can be when you work with a smart and reliable timeshare resale company like Timeshare Sellers info. Don't wait any longer if you need to sell timeshares; we're ready when you are! If I Originally Purchased from a Resort Can I Resell My Timeshare? Yes! Regardless of when or where you purchased your timeshare, you are entitled to resell it. If I Still Have Financing on My Timeshare Can I Sell it? In order to resell timeshare which is still under financing, the pay off balance must be cleared before the timeshare sales process can be finalized. For instance, if you still owe $10,000 on your timeshare, you will need to take care of the remaining sum, otherwise the property deed cannot legally be transferred to the new owner. What Does Right of First Refusal (ROFR) Mean? When a seller and a buyer come to a purchase agreement, the resort at which the timeshare is located has the legal right to purchase the timeshare for the agreed amount. If the resort enforces their right, they will buy back the timeshare. If they waive their ROFR, the original sale can proceed. In either case, you – the timeshare reseller – will receive the same amount for the sale of your timeshare. Am I Required to Use a Real Estate Broker to Resell Timeshare? No! A timeshare is not a traditional piece of real estate, thus brokerage is optional. In most cases, there is no need to pay a commission for a real estate broker's services, when you can easily find a buyer yourself. Sell My Timeshare NOW can help you by advertising your timeshare on our dynamic website, and we can offer professional guidance through the whole resale process. For those who prefer it, broker assistance is available through our affiliate Timeshare Broker Services. We recommend their assistance to timeshare resellers who want as little as possible to do with the process of finding a buyer and settling on a sale price. Do I Need an Appraisal to Sell Timeshare? No, your timeshare property was not "appraised" when you purchased it, and it does not need to be appraised to be resold. If you are interested in the resale value of your timeshare, please take advantage of our free market value survey. Do I Need a Lawyer to Handle the Timeshare Closing? Maybe?I NOW recommend a licensed and bonded title company like Chicago Title Timeshare. This company executes the entire closing procedure – which includes deed preparation, escrow of funds, timeshare estoppel certificate, closing statements and recording fees – all for one low flat-rate. Any work done to the title is reviewed by a licensed attorney and is guaranteed to be precise. Can I Resell My Timeshare if I Lost My Deed? Yes! The closing company you choose can contact the county courthouse in which your timeshare is located to recover the deed. The fee for this service is usually around US $25. How Long Does a Timeshare Closing Take? Timeshare closings usually take between six (6) to ten (10) weeks from start to finish. What Happens to My Banked Time If I Sell? If you have deposited your week with an affiliated exchange company, that interval is no longer affiliated with the resort. So the sale of the resort timeshare doesn't affect banked weeks. The banked time can be used by you or included with the sale as an added incentive for buyers. How Long Will it Take to Resell My Timeshare? No one can accurately determine a specific length of time within which your property will sell. There are many factors that will influence the resale of your timeshare including location, resort quality, flexibility of usage, season, demand and, of course, price. Ready to Resell Your Timeshare?   Amid falling real estate prices, timeshares are taking it on the chin. Scams have proliferated in recent months by firms claiming to have found a buyer, or charging an advance fee to try and sell a property. In Massachusetts, Attorney General Martha Coakley is dealing with a different timeshare issue. She has just entered into a settlement with several timeshare resorts and their owners for allegedly marketing and selling intervals for Cape Cod time-share resorts but failing to properly record those intervals as required by law. According to the settlement, the defendants marketed and sold timeshare intervals for four Cape Cod time-share resorts: Soundings Seaside Resort, Breakers Ocean View Resort, Breakers Ocean Front Resort, and Edgewater Beach Resort ("Cape Cod Resorts"). Redweek.com Required to record the deed Under the Massachusetts Real Estate Time-Share Act, the defendants were required to record a deed or notice of license within days of selling the time-share interval. Instead, the defendants allegedly failed to record deeds or notices of license with the Barnstable County Registry of Deeds for months or even years, despite representing to consumers who had purchased time-shares that their time-shares were properly recorded. The Assurance of Discontinuance, filed in Suffolk Superior Court against Soundings Seaside Resort, LLC, Breakers Resort, LLC, New England Resort Marketing, LLC, Leon D. Narbonne, Sr. and Gordon Clark III, prohibits the defendants from marketing, advertising, or selling time-share intervals in Massachusetts without properly recording time-share intervals pursuant to the Massachusetts Real Estate Time-Share Act. In addition, the Assurance provides for a payment of $100,000 to the Commonwealth for penalties. However, the Commonwealth will suspend collection of $75,000 provided the defendants comply with the terms of the Assurance and record all outstanding time-share deeds and/or notices of licenses. "Failing to record time-shares pursuant to the law puts consumers' property interests in these time-shares at risk," Coakley said. "This agreement ensures that those consumers' property rights are protected, and that the defendants will take their responsibilities as time-share owners seriously and abide by the law." Related action In a separate but related lawsuit filed on August 2, 2010, in Suffolk Superior Court, Coakley obtained a preliminary injunction against a Cape Cod man and his business. According to the complaint Christopher Moss and the company he founded, Timeshare Consulting Group, LLC, promised consumers he could obtain full refunds of the purchase price for their respective time-shares because the Cape Cod Resorts owners' failed to record the time-share intervals. Moss allegedly misrepresented to consumers that he was an expert in time-share and consumer law and solicited consumers by mail, telephone, and face-to-face meetings, for his services as a time-share consultant. Moss allegedly collected $495 from consumers who had purchased time-share intervals at the Cape Cod Resorts in order to prepare complaint letters to send to the Attorney General's Office and the Cape Cod Resort owners. The complaint alleges that Moss solicited consumers for his services by deceptively representing the complexity of the complaint process, and urging consumers to hurry because the statute of limitations on their claims would soon expire. Moss did not disclose that consumers are able to file complaints with the Attorney General at no charge. On August 12, 2010, Suffolk Superior Court Judge Frank Gaziano granted a preliminary injunction against Moss and Timeshare Consulting Group, prohibiting them from representing that they are time-share law experts; contacting any Massachusetts resident to offer time-share consulting services; soliciting or accepting a payment for filing complaint forms with the Attorney General's Office; and engaging in the unauthorized practice of law. Agents, brokers, and customers can all access this data (though with differing amounts of detail). Information about the customer that is publically available online is reduced to status reports, whereas the brokers and agents have access to more detailed information. We do not store financially sensitive information (social security number, bank account number, credit card numbers for example). After our services have been completed, the public and brokers have access to the user data for a period of one month, after which it is retained for internal use only. If a user requests that his or her personal information be removed from our database, we will do so as quickly as is possible. AUTOMATIC DATA COLLECTION Our web sites have features that automatically collect information from users, to deliver content specific to users' interests and to honor their preferences. Search engine optimization is what SEO stands for. It is a method, technique, or process of enhancing the rank of one's website when searched on Google, Yahoo, and Bing or any other search engine. Optimization is done through organic or real searches wherein its main goal is to put your site on the first few pages of Google search results for a particular keyword or phrase. The higher and the more frequent your site appears on the first two or three pages of any search engines, the greater the chances your site will be visited by internet users. The types of search results can vary from local, global, and video searches to industry-specific vertical search engines. Harnessing the power of SEO can build up your online presence and can do wonders for your site. There are many ways to search optimize your site. It can be onsite SEO or offsite SEO. Onsite optimization is usually integrated in your website design for example using meta tags, keywords, or labels in your web content or editing your html and coding to make it relevant to target keywords. Offsite optimization includes creating and increasing your back links and inbound links, especially if you are linking to high PR sites. Blogging, forum posting, and social bookmarking are also ways to promote your site and increase traffic to it. SEO can also refer to Search Engine Optimizers a term given to consultants who provides optimization projects or persons who perform SEO services in house on behalf of clients or site owners. Hiring an SEO company can be done online. Some of them can even come from any parts of the world. This is a trend that has been going on now and will be for many years to come. The internet has greatly influenced our lives, the way we communicate, do business, socialize and how we work is also affected by it, in a good way. Site optimisation services can be a part of a marketing package or a standalone service. As mentioned optimization can be integrated in every element of web design such as the site’s menus, articles, content, videos, and images. Another kind of SEO technique is the black hat method. The most popular example of this method is spamming. This type of technique is discouraged because it can destroy search experiences of net users and search result relevance. Usually your site can be removed from Google indices when they found out that you are using black hat technique.   ARDA updates said...
August 30, 2011 @ 4:25:38 PM EST

WASHINGTON, August 24, 2011 – Today, the American Resort Development Association’s Resort Owners’ Coalition (ARDA-ROC) launched the Timeshare Resale Resource Center(http://www.ardaroc.org/resales), an online information resource for timeshare owners who desire to better understand how to safely maneuver the uneven timeshare secondary market. As a result of a growing need to create more clarity and transparency for timeshare owners who wish to sell their timeshare interest, the Resale Resource Center was born to provide objective information on the resale process, tips on selling, and consumer advisories on the various resale scams currently being investigated by state authorities. While regulation of the timeshare industry has developed and matured over the past 30 years, specific regulation of the secondary market is still in its infancy. The current economic environment has led to a rise in disreputable resale companies trying to profit from vulnerable timeshare owners and as a result the resale process has become confusing to many consumers. “With the rise in fraudulent resale practices and the far too many dishonest resellers preying on consumers, it is necessary to establish legitimate guidelines to help safeguard consumers and ensure a safe resale experience with reputable companies,” said Howard Nusbaum, president and CEO of ARDA (the industry’s not-for-profit advocacy group). Over the past eighteen months, ARDA and its member task force have worked diligently to propose model legislation for the secondary resale market as part of an effort to standardize and legitimize timeshare resellers and the resale process. The Model Resale Act calls for specific guidelines related to resellers, including standards for sales and marketing practices and more stringent penalties for fraudulent behavior. “Our industry has long advocated for a systemic solution to the issue of timeshare resale companies to foster the continued healthy development of the secondary market,” said Nusbaum. The Model Act will be used in efforts with state legislators and other policymakers as a recommended policy to help guide state legislative solutions to the timeshare secondary market. Secondary market issues have frustrated timeshare owners and their governing homeowners’ associations. ARDA and its members have monitored resale company practices, provided information to consumers, held symposiums, and created think tanks with industry leaders to discuss the best solutions to ensure consumer protections and adherence to resale standards. “Leaders in our industry – developers, managers, homeowners’ associations and resellers – have tirelessly worked together to develop new business models for the secondary market as a way to address basic problems rather than treat symptoms,” said Ken McKelvey, Chairman of ARDA-ROC. “Existing owners are just as concerned as would-be consumers about the misinformation regarding resales and have supported efforts to educate owners about the process to buy or sell a vacation product from the secondary market,” said McKelvey. ARDA is committed to working with ARDA-ROC on issues pertaining to the secondary market. “We hear daily from our resort coalition members with concerns about misrepresentations and confusion in the secondary market of timeshare. We are committed to working with regulators, law enforcement and reputable resellers to create a robust secondary market where laws are respected and enforced and consumer expectations are met,” said Sandra DePoy, ARDA-ROC’s Administrator. All countries with stable economies and Government will be considered. We are seeking global projects in these SECTORS that require design build, funding referral: marina, zoological park, eco-tourism, supermarket chain, convenience store, gas station, theme park, motorsport, restaurant, franchise, race track, indoor snow ski, snowdome, casino, amusement, hotels, transit, railroad, monorail, ship, seaport, ports, terminal, golf, shopping mall, airport, urban entertainment center, office complex, high rise, central business district, electric power, college, recreation, waterpark, movie production set, experiential museum, dinner theatre, hospital, other Please note that in addition to hotel design/construction/management ; we do fully integrated resorts, CBD mixed use developments, short term, long term and permanent residential, family entertainment centers, race tracks, retail, commercial, and office complexes, marinas, ships, boats, steam locomotive, tourist railroads, full infrastructure including waste management, paving, Light Rail Transport and Swiss mono-rail transportation. We also have golf course design and exclusive night golf system. Our networked associates have a proven track record on all aspects of construction and operation which includes theme park design and development. HOTEL MANAGEMENT Our consortium is not only equal to the task, but far superior and without equal. Whilst we are low key we don't seek nor do we want the limelight or high profile publicity. The major differences we operate under are that we do not demand franchise fees, do not irrevocably lock the owner into excessive long term contracts which are not fair or equitable on both parties. We do not demand mandatory high contributions to pool sales & marketing which is ineffective by not benefiting an individual property. Each property retains its individual identity and uniqueness. Standard operating procedures [SOPs] are not generic but are written specifically for each property. We have a depth of senior management from the "top luxury chains" hospitality from the heart, providing a more cost effective, much more efficient operation. Our service has a competitive edge on all other management companies, provides greater guest satisfaction, loyalty and repeat guests, higher staff satisfaction and stability resulting in a higher ROI for the owner. The point I emphasis, is that whilst we are most efficient, cost effective and amenable to negotiation, we are in the luxury market, do not cut corners, do not deviate from our terms and conditions nor do we drop our fees or standards. If an owner wishes to proceed, they must provide an up-front advance on costs to mobilize or we just do not proceed.   'I thought it was my sister': Woman loses $2,000 to Facebook scam Edythe Schumacher Teacher's aide Edythe Schumacher, 58, says she feels "so stupid." By Bob Sullivan Now, you can't even trust your sister on Facebook. Edythe Schumacher logged onto the social networking site recently and a picture of her sister popped up immediately, inviting her into a Facebook chat. After a bit of small talk, Schumacher’s sister – Susan Palmer – egged her on to apply for a government grant, saying she’d just received one. For an up-front fee of $2,000, Schumacher was assured, she'd get access to up to $500,000. Schumacher trusted her sister — and lost $2,000. Apparently, Facebook impersonation scams have reached a new level of duplicity. Palmer's account had been hacked, Schumacher says, by an impersonator skilled enough to pretend to be her own flesh and blood. The fake Palmer eventually talked Schumacher into wiring $2,000 to an address in Massachusetts. "Turns out I was not chatting at all with my sister," Schumacher told authorities, according to a report filed with the Ohio state attorney general’s office. "I would never have sent the money if I didn’t think it was my sister." Facebook account hijacking has been around as long as Facebook itself. While it often amounts to little more than childish pranks, the theft of someone's identity on Facebook can lead to real harm. Imposters have successfully tricked victims into wiring money before — a common scam involves contacting friends and writing an email with dramatic claims of muggings, accompanied by desperate pleas to wire money. See this earlier report. 'More and more sophisticated' But impersonating a sibling in a real-time online conversation represents a crime that's bold even for Internet scam artists. "Scammers are getting more and more sophisticated as the technology ramps up, so people have to really be on guard," said Lisa Hackley, spokeswoman for Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine. Schumacher filed a report with Ohio authorities last month detailing the elaborate scam, which also invoked the name of a former high-ranking FBI official and a Massachusetts nonprofit devoted to helping troubled children. “I just feel so stupid,” said Schumacher, 58, who works as a teacher’s aide working with autistic kids. Her husband is retired, so the couple is basically living on a fixed income. “But this one blew my mind.” The chat invitation arrived immediately when Schumacher logged on to her computer on Aug. 9. Palmer had sent an -mail blast, warning friends and family that her Facebook page had been hacked, but Schumacher didn’t have time to read her email before the online conversation began. “I was so mad at myself when I finally did read the email,” she said. advertisement After bragging about getting a grant herself, the fake Palmer urged Schumacher to contact Sgt. Chris Swecker for more details. Swecker said he was with the Federal Government Humanity & Empowerment Program. "He informed me I need to Western Union $2,000 to acquire the grant,” Schumacher told authorities. And of course, she had to do it immediately. Chris Swecker is the name of a prominent FBI agent who specialized in electronic crimes during the Internet's early years. He later went on to be chief security officer at Bank of America before retiring recently to do consulting work. It's unclear whether the criminal intended to use Swecker's reputation to aid the scam, but it's common for computer crooks to use names plucked from online sources to fill in the blanks while composing a scam scenario. Swecker told a reporter that he hadn’t heard that his name was used to dupe an innocent victim. "There's an epidemic of this kind of thing happening on the Internet," said Swecker. "I speak about online crime all the time, so it's ironic my name is caught up in this." The fake Swecker told Schumacher to wire the money to a woman named Patricia Casella in Springfield, Mass. The ruse was thorough. When he called her cell phone, and the caller ID read "Empowerment GOV54." Persuaded, she wired the money. “He waited (on the phone) till the transaction was completed,” Schumacher said. Even after the money arrived, the imposter contacted her again, looking for $800 more. But by then, she was wise to the scam. “He did contact another one of my sister’s friends, too, but she didn’t fall for it,” she said. Innocent bystander The address where Schumacher wired the $2,000 is that of a nonprofit named The Children's Study Home, which says on its website that it caters to the psychological needs of children who have suffered abuse and neglect. The agency is an innocent bystander in this scam, and probably others. Criminals who receive stolen funds via Western Union don’t have to visit the destination address. They merely show up at the nearest Western Union facility with some identification and walk out with the money. Steve McCafferty, executive director of The Children's Study Home, said this isn't the first time criminals have used his agency's address as a destination for stolen money. "We know this has happened before," he said. Criminals have, at least once before, picked up cash labeled with his agency's address at a Western Union in a nearby grocery store, he said. The agency has received suspicious packages, also. Springfield police have been notified but so far have been able to do little to stop the crime. advertisement "We're just a nonprofit agency, we don't want to be a part of this ... and it’s unfortunate that people are falling for it," he said. This newfangled Facebook impersonation scam is just an elaborate narrative designed to distract victims from a variation on an old-fashioned "advance-fee loan scam," said Hackley, of the Ohio Attorney General’s Office. Criminals tell victims they can qualify for a loan by paying a small up-front fee, but there is no loan, she said. The new Facebook scam is also reminiscent of a traditional grandparent scam, she said, where a criminal calls a victim pretending to be a grandchild and makes a desperate plea for bail money or emergency cash. "Don't tell my parents" is often a part of that storyline, Hackley said. Elderly parents can often be tricked into sending money, she said, particularly now that many of them list their grandchildren on their public Facebook page. "The criminals can look at their pages and use the correct names. They are easy to find online,” Hackley said. Facebook pages and pictures can also help criminals flesh out their narratives – “Grandma, we had fun at your 80th birthday party, didn’t we?” 'Vulnerable niche' That’s why it’s a good idea for children and grandchildren to aid older Facebook users with privacy settings. There’s no need to make family member names available to strangers. Swecker said he's very concerned about the growing numbers of older Americans who have begun to use social networking tools but have yet to develop the necessary skepticism for the online world. "They are a vulnerable niche, the age group that didn't grow up with the Internet," he said. "Sometimes, the older generation has no idea how to protect themselves. For them, (using Facebook) is like giving the keys of a Ferrari to a 14-year-old." Schumacher recommended that Facebook users drop a personal question or two into every chat, just to help positively identify chat participants. She’s currently working overtime at school, trying to replace the lost funds. “When you are counting every penny, it hurts. … I can't believe I did that. I’m not a risky person with money,” she said. “But I learned my lesson with Facebook.” Reminder: Mature adults can contribute to a conversation without using words like "idiot" and "stupid."   Paid Search To Grow 15% In 2012 by Laurie Sullivan, Dec 7, 2011, 11:56 AM Comment Recommend (1) inShare.34 Subscribe to Online Media Daily RSSEmailPrint TAGS facebook, google, microsoft, paid search, search, twitter Brands will spend 12.6% more this year, compared with last, to advertise across the Internet, according to ZenithOptimedia, a Publicis Groupe company. Driven, in part, by online video and accompanying ads, the study shows 16.4% growth in 2012, followed by 17.3% in 2013, and 17.2% in 2014. ZenithOptimedia estimates paid search will grow 15% in 2012 and 2013, followed by 13% in 2014. The company expects growth to slow as the search landscape matures. Google and Microsoft will continue to focus on ad units and targeting techniques through desktop, mobile and tablet search. Some of the boost to online ad spending will come from political ads. Republican Tim Pawlenty disclosed his 2012 presidential aspirations on Facebook, while Mitt Romney did it in a tweet. President Barack Obama kicked off his reelection with a digital video emailed to 13 million backers. The ZenithOptimedia report puts placing a promoted trend on Twitter now costs $120,000 daily, up from between $25,000 and $30,000 when Twitter first launched in April 2010. Now brands will have an opportunity to place ads using a self-serve platform, which the study suggests could drive up prices not only for Twitter ads, but Google paid search ads, as well. Overall, brands will spend nearly $50 billion on online ads in the U.S. by 2015. Of the formats in this category, online video ads will continue to experience the fastest growth, with an increase of more than 52% this year. It is no surprise that mobile marketing, supported by ubiquitous apps, advanced browsers and faster speeds, continues to fuel the uptick in dollars. Smartphone ownership now comprises 28% of all mobile phone ownership, with nearly 1 million smartphones activated daily. The average number of ads shown per app is 4.3, and the average session lasts just more than four minutes. The study also notes that the average smartphone user now spend more time in mobile apps per day than the average Internet user spends online.   Willard Mitt Romney (born March 12, 1947) is an American businessman and politician. He was the 70th Governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007 and is a candidate for the 2012 Republican Party presidential nomination. The son of George W. Romney (the former Governor of Michigan) and Lenore Romney, Mitt Romney was raised in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and later served as a Mormon missionary in France. He received his undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University, and thereafter earned Juris Doctor/Master of Business Administration joint degrees from Harvard's law and business schools. Romney entered the management consulting business, which led to a position at Bain & Company, where he eventually served as CEO and brought the company out of crisis. He was also co-founder and head of the spin-off company Bain Capital, a private equity investment firm that became highly profitable and one of the largest such firms in the nation. The wealth Romney accumulated there would help fund his future political campaigns. He was very active in his church, serving as ward bishop and later stake president in his area. He ran as the Republican candidate in the 1994 U.S. Senate election in Massachusetts, losing to incumbent Ted Kennedy. Romney organized and steered the 2002 Winter Olympics as head of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee, and helped turn the troubled games into a financial success. Romney was elected Governor of Massachusetts in 2002, but did not seek reelection in 2006. He presided over a series of spending cuts and increases in fees that eliminated a projected $3 billion deficit. He also signed into law the Massachusetts health care reform legislation, which provided near-universal health insurance access via subsidies and state-level mandates and was the first of its kind in the nation. During the course of his political career, his positions or rhetorical emphasis have shifted more towards American conservatism in several areas. Romney ran for the Republican nomination in the 2008 U.S. presidential election, winning several primaries and caucuses, but eventually losing the nomination to John McCain. In the following years he gave speeches and raised campaign funds on behalf of fellow Republicans. On June 2, 2011, Romney announced that he would seek the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. Political observers and public opinion polls consistently place him among the front-runners in the race. Romney, who by 1948 had become an automobile executive, and Lenore Romney. His mother was a native of Logan, Utah, and his father had been born in a Mormon colony in Chihuahua, Mexico, to American parents.[2] Romney's ancestry is predominantly English, as well as Scottish and German.[3] As a sixth-generation member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,[4][5] Romney is descended from a genealogically interconnected political family sometimes known as the Pratt–Romneys. The three siblings before him were Margo Lynn, Jane LaFount, and G. Scott,[6] followed by Mitt after a gap of six years.[7] Romney was named after hotel magnate J. Willard Marriott, his father's best friend, and his father's cousin Milton "Mitt" Romney, 1925–1929 quarterback for the Chicago Bears.[8][nb 1] When he was five, the family moved from Detroit to the affluent suburb of Bloomfield Hills.[10] His father became CEO of American Motors and turned the company around from the brink of bankruptcy; by the time he was twelve, his father had become a nationally known figure in print and on television.[11] Romney idolized his father, read automotive trade magazines, kept abreast of automotive developments, and aspired to be an executive in the industry himself one day.[10][12][13] His father also presided over the Detroit Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to which the family belonged.[14] Mitt Romney overlooks the Chrysler exhibit at the 1964 New York World's Fair with his father, Michigan governor George Romney.Romney went to public elementary schools[9] and then from seventh grade on, attended Cranbrook School in Bloomfield Hills, a private boys preparatory school of the classic mold where he was the lone Mormon and where many students came from even more privileged backgrounds.[10][15][16][17] He was not particularly athletic and at first did not excel at academics.[10] While a sophomore, he participated in the campaign in which his father was elected Governor of Michigan.[nb 2] George Romney was re-elected twice; Mitt worked for him as an intern in the governor's office, and was present at the 1964 Republican National Convention when his moderate father battled conservative party nominee Barry Goldwater over issues of civil rights and ideological extremism.[10][12] Romney had a steady set of chores and worked summer jobs, including being a security guard at a Chrysler plant.[15] Initially a manager for the ice hockey team and a pep squad member,[15][18] during his final year at Cranbook, Romney joined the cross country running team[9] and improved academically, but was still not a star pupil.[10][16] His social skills were strong, however, and he won an award for those "whose contributions to school life are often not fully recognized through already existing channels".[16] Romney was an energetic child who enjoyed pranks.[nb 3] In March of his senior year, he began dating Ann Davies, two years behind him, whom he had once known in elementary school;[20][21] she attended the private Kingswood School, the sister school to Cranbrook.[16] The two informally agreed to marriage around the time of his June 1965 graduation.[10][21] University, France mission, marriage and children: 1965–1975Romney attended Stanford University for a year.[10] Although the campus was becoming radicalized with the beginnings of 1960s social and political movements, he kept a well-groomed appearance and enjoyed traditional campus events.[10] In May 1966, he was part of a counter-protest against a group staging a sit-in in the university administration building in opposition to draft status tests.[10][22] He worked as a security guard again in order to fund secret trips home to see Ann.[23] In July 1966, Romney left for 30 months in France as a Mormon missionary, a traditional duty that his father and other relatives had done.[10][24][25] He arrived in Le Havre with ideas about how to change and promote the French Mission, while facing physical and economic deprivation in their cramped quarters.[25][26] Rules against drinking, smoking, and dating were strictly enforced.[26] Like most individual Mormon missionaries, he did not gain many converts, with the nominally Catholic but secular, wine-loving French people proving especially resistant to a religion that prohibits alcohol.[10][25][26][27] He became demoralized, and later recalled it as the only time when "most of what I was trying to do was rejected."[25] In Nantes, Romney was bruised defending two female missionaries against a horde of local rugby players.[26] He continued to work hard; having grown up in Michigan rather than the more insular Utah world, Romney was better able to interact with the French.[17][26] He was promoted to zone leader in Bordeaux in early 1968, then in the spring of that year became assistant to the mission president in Paris, the highest position for a missionary.[25][26][28] In the Mission Home in Paris he enjoyed palace-like accommodations.[28] Romney's support for the U.S. role in the Vietnam War was only reinforced when the French greeted him with hostility over the matter and he debated them in return.[25][26] He also witnessed the May 1968 general strike and student uprisings.[25] In June 1968, an automobile Romney was driving in southern France was hit by another vehicle, seriously injuring him and killing one of his passengers, the wife of the mission president.[nb 4] Romney, who was not at fault in the accident,[nb 4] became co-acting president of a mission demoralized and disorganized by the May civil disturbances and by the car accident.[17] Romney rallied and motivated the others and they met an ambitious goal of 200 baptisms for the year, the most for the mission in a decade.[17] By the end of his stint in December 1968, Romney was overseeing the work of 175 fellow members.[25][29] Romney developed a lifelong affection for France and its people, and speaks French.[31] The experience in the country also changed him. It instilled in him a belief that life is fragile and that he needed seriousness of purpose. He also gained organizational experience and a record of success that he had theretofore lacked.[10][17][26][29] It also represented a crucible, after having been only a half-hearted Mormon growing up: "On a mission, your faith in Jesus Christ either evaporates or it becomes much deeper. For me it became much deeper."[25] While he was away, Ann Davies had converted to the LDS Church, guided by George Romney, and had begun attending Brigham Young University.[10][21] Mitt was nervous that she had been wooed by others while he was away, and indeed she had dated others, but at their first meeting following his return they reconnected and decided to get married in two weeks but agreed to wait three months to appease their parents.[21][32] They were married on March 21, 1969, in a Bloomfield Hills civil ceremony presided over by a church elder; the following day the couple flew to Utah for a wedding ceremony at the Salt Lake Temple.[32][33] Both Mitt and Ann Romney went to college at Brigham Young, where he gave the commencement address at graduation.Romney began attending Brigham Young too.[9] He had missed much of the tumultuous American anti-Vietnam War movement while away, and was surprised to learn that his father had turned against the war during his ill-fated 1968 presidential campaign.[25] Regarding the military draft, Romney had initially gotten a student deferment, then like most other Mormon missionaries had received a ministerial deferment while in France, then got another student deferment.[25][34] When those ran out, his high number in the December 1969 draft lottery (300) meant he would not be selected.[13][25][34][35] At culturally conservative Brigham Young, Romney continued to be separated from much of the upheaval of the era, and did not join in the few protests against the war or the LDS Church's policy at the time of denying full membership to blacks.[13][25] He became president and successful fundraiser for the all-male Cougar Club and showed a new-found discipline in his studies.[25] In his senior year he took leave to work as driver and advance man for his mother Lenore Romney's eventually unsuccessful 1970 campaign for U.S. Senator from Michigan.[13][32] He graduated from Brigham Young in 1971, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English and giving commencement addresses to both his own College of Humanities and to the whole university.[nb 5] The Romneys' first son, Tagg, was born in 1970[32] while both were undergraduates at Brigham Young[37] and living in a basement apartment.[25] They subsequently welcomed Matt (1971), Josh (1975), Ben (1978), and Craig (1981).[32] Ann Romney's work as a stay-at-home mom would enable her husband to pursue his career.[38] Romney still wanted to pursue a business path, but his father, by now serving in President Richard Nixon's cabinet as U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, advised that a law degree would be valuable.[39][40] Thus Romney became one of only fifteen students to enroll at the recently created joint Juris Doctor/Master of Business Administration four-year program coordinated between Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School.[41] Fellow students considered Romney guilelessly optimistic, noting his strong work ethic along with a buttoned-down demeanor and appearance.[41][42] He readily adapted to the business school's pragmatic, data-driven case study method of teaching, excelled in classroom participation there, and led a study group whom he pushed to get all A's.[40] He had a different social experience than most of his classmates, since he lived in a Belmont, Massachusetts, house with Ann and by now two children; he was non-ideological and did not involve himself in the political or social issues of the day.[32][40] He graduated in 1975 cum laude from the law school, in the top third of that class, and was named a Baker Scholar for graduating in the top five percent of his business school class.[36][41] Business careerRomney was heavily recruited and, after graduation, chose to remain in Massachusetts and go to work for Boston Consulting Group (BCG), thinking that working as a management consultant to a variety of companies would prepare him for a future job as a chief executive.[15][39][43][nb 6] Romney was part of a 1970s wave of top graduates who chose to go into consulting rather than join a major company directly.[45] Romney's legal and business education proved useful in his job, and he became a rising star[39] while applying BCG principles such as the growth-share matrix.[4] In 1977, he was hired away by Bain & Company, a management consulting firm in Boston that had been formed a few years earlier by Bill Bain and other former BCG employees.[39][4][46] Bain would later say of the thirty-year-old Romney, "He had the appearance of confidence of a guy who was maybe ten years older."[47] With Bain & Company, Romney learned the "Bain way", which consisted of immersing the firm in each client's business,[39][47] and not simply to issue recommendations, but to stay with the company until they were changed for the better.[4][46][48] With a record of helping clients such as the Monsanto Company, Outboard Marine Corporation, Burlington Industries, and Corning Incorporated, Romney became a vice president of the firm in 1978 and within a few years one of its best consultants.[9][39][43] Romney became a believer in Bain's methods; he later said, "The idea that consultancies should not measure themselves by the thickness of their reports, or even the elegance of their writing, but rather by whether or not the report was effectively implemented was an inflection point in the history of consulting."[46] Logo of company that Romney co-foundedRomney was restless for a company of his own to run, and in 1983 Bill Bain offered him the chance to head a new venture that would buy into companies, have them benefit from Bain techniques, and then reap higher rewards than just consulting fees.[39][4] Romney initially refrained from accepting the offer, and Bain re-arranged the terms in a complicated partnership structure so that there was no financial or professional risk to Romney.[39][47][49] Thus, in 1984, Romney left Bain & Company to co-found the spin-off private equity investment firm, Bain Capital.[48] In the face of skepticism from potential investors, Bain and Romney spent a year raising the $37 million in funds needed to start the new operation, which had fewer than ten employees.[43][47][50][51] As general partner of the new firm, Romney spent little money on costs such as office appearance, and saw weak spots in so many potential deals that by 1986, very few had been done.[39] At first, Bain Capital focused on venture capital opportunities.[39] Their first big success came with a 1986 investment to help start Staples Inc., after founder Thomas G. Stemberg convinced Romney of the market size for office supplies and Romney convinced others; Bain Capital eventually reaped a nearly sevenfold return on its investment, and Romney sat on the Staples board of directors for over a decade.[39][50][51] Romney soon switched Bain Capital's focus from startups to the relatively new business of leveraged buyouts: buying existing firms with money mostly borrowed against their assets, partnering with existing management to apply the "Bain way" to their operations (rather than the hostile takeovers practiced in other leverage buyout scenarios), and then selling them off in a few years.[39][47] Existing CEOs were offered large equity stakes in the process, as part of Bain Capital's belief in the emerging agency theory notion that CEOs should be bound to maximizing shareholder value rather than other goals.[51] Bain Capital lost most of its money in many of its early leveraged buyouts, but then started finding deals that made large returns,[39] with some of the highest being a 34-fold return on Calumet Coach and a 16-fold return on the Gartner Group.[52] Indeed, during the 14 years Romney headed the company, Bain Capital's average annual internal rate of return on realized investments was 113 percent.[43] Romney excelled at presenting and selling the deals the company made.[49] The firm initially gave a cut of its profits to Bain & Company, but Romney later persuaded Bain to give that up.[49] Within Bain Capital, Romney spread profits from deals widely within the firm in order to keep people motivated, and often kept less than ten percent for himself.[53] The firm invested in or acquired many well-known companies such as Accuride, Brookstone, Domino's Pizza, Sealy Corporation, Sports Authority, and Artisan Entertainment, as well as lesser-known companies in the industrial and medical sectors.[39][47][54] Romney's wary instincts were still in force at times, and he was generally data-driven and averse to risk.[39][51] He wanted to drop a Bain Capital hedge fund that initially lost money, but other partners prevailed and it eventually gained billions.[39] He also personally opted out of the Artisan Entertainment deal, not wanting to profit from a studio that produced R-rated films.[39] Within Bain Capital, Romney was viewed as a very fair manager and he received considerable loyalty from the firm's members.[51] Romney was on the board of directors of Damon Corporation, a medical testing company later found guilty of defrauding the government; Bain Capital tripled its investment before selling off the company, with the fraud being discovered by the new owners (Romney was never implicated).[39] In some cases Romney had little involvement with a company once acquired.[50] Bain Capital's leveraged buyouts sometimes led to layoffs, either soon after acquisition or later after the firm had left.[39][4][49][50] Bain Capital officials later said that overall, more jobs were added than lost due to these buyouts, but a lack of available records makes such assertions unverifiable.[55][52] In any case, maximizing the value of acquired companies and the return to Bain's investors, not job creation, was the firm's fundamental goal, as it was for most private equity operations.[55][50] Regarding job losses, Romney later said, "Sometimes the medicine is a little bitter but it is necessary to save the life of the patient. My job was to try and make the enterprise successful, and in my view the best security a family can have is that the business they work for is strong."[49] Bain Capital's acquisition of Ampad exemplified a deal where it profited handsomely from early payments and management fees, even though the subject company itself ended up going into bankruptcy.[39][51][55] Dade Behring was another case where Bain Capital received an eightfold return on its investment, but the company itself was saddled with debt and laid off over a thousand employees before Bain Capital exited (the company subsequently went into bankruptcy, with more layoffs, before recovering and prospering).[52] Bain was among the private equity firms that took the most such fees.[47][51] Romney said in retrospect: "It is one thing that if I had a chance to go back I would be more sensitive to. It is always a balance. Great care has got to be taken not to take a dividend or a distribution from a company that puts that company at risk. [Having taken a big payment from a company that later failed] would make me sick, sick at heart."[47] In 1990, Romney was asked to return to Bain & Company, which was facing financial collapse.[48] He was announced as its new CEO in January 1991[56][57] (but drew only a symbolic salary of one dollar).[48] Romney managed an effort to restructure the firm's employee stock-ownership plan, real-estate deals and bank loans, while rallying the firm's thousand employees, imposing a new governing structure that included Bain and the other founding partners giving up control, and increasing fiscal transparency.[39][43][48] Within about a year, he had led Bain & Company through a turnaround and returned the firm to profitability without further layoffs or partner defections.[43] He turned Bain & Company over to new leadership and returned to Bain Capital in December 1992.[39][57][58] Romney left Bain Capital in February 1999 to serve as the President and CEO of the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Games Organizing Committee.[39] By that time, Bain Capital was on its way to being one of the top private equity firms in the nation,[49] having increased its number of partners from 5 to 18, having 115 employees overall, and having $4 billion under its management.[47][50] It had made some 150 deals where it acquired and then sold a company.[52] Bain Capital's approach of applying consulting expertise to the companies it invested in became widely copied within the private equity industry.[18][50] University of Chicago Booth School of Business economist Steven Kaplan would later say, "[Romney] came up with a model that was very successful and very innovative and that now everybody uses."[51] His experience at Bain & Company and Bain Capital gave Romney a business-oriented world view – centering around a hate of waste and inefficiency, a love for data and charts and analysis and presentation, and a belief in keeping an open mind and seeking opposing points of view – that he would take with him to the public sector.[15][48] At the time of his departure, Romney negotiated an agreement with Bain Capital that allowed him to receive a passive profit share as a retired partner in some Bain Capital entities, including buyout and investment funds.[59][53] With the private equity business continuing to thrive, this deal would bring him millions of dollars in income each year.[53] As a result of his business career, by 2007 Romney and his wife had a net worth of between $190 and $250 million, most of it held in blind trusts.[59] An additional blind trust existed in the name of the Romneys' children and grandchildren that was valued at between $70 and $100 million as of 2007.[60] The couple's net worth remained in the same range as of 2011, and was still held in blind trusts.[61] Local church leadershipDuring his years in business, Romney also served in the local lay clergy for the LDS Church and tithed his income.[26] Over time this would result in millions of dollars going to the church.[26][62] He served as ward bishop for Belmont, Massachusetts from 1981 to 1986, acting as the ecclesiastical and administrative head of his congregation.[63][64] As such he formulated Sunday services and classes, using The Bible and the Book of Mormon to guide the congregation, and also did home teaching.[65] He forged bonds with other religious institutions in the area when the Belmont Meeting House was hit by a fire of suspicious origins in 1984; the congregation rotated its meetings at other churches while theirs was rebuilt.[64][62] From 1986 to 1994 Romney presided over the Boston Stake, which included more than a dozen congregations in eastern Massachusetts.[26][63][66][65] He organized a team to handle financial and management issues, sought to counter anti-Mormon sentiments, and tried to solve social problems among poor Southeast Asian converts.[64][62] An unpaid position, Romney's local church leadership often took 30 or more hours a week of his time.[65] Due to his responsibilities, he generally refrained from any business travel that would prevent him from getting back to the Boston area by night.[65] Romney took a hands-on role in general matters, helping in maintenance efforts in- and outside homes, visiting the sick, and counseling troubled or burdened church members.[63][64][65] A number of local church members later credited Romney with turning their lives around or helping get them through difficult times.[63][64][65][62] Some others were rankled by his leadership style and desired a more consensus-based approach.[64] Romney later said that the years spent as pastor gave him direct exposure to people struggling in economically difficult circumstances different from his own affluent upbringing, and empathy for those going through problematic family situations.[67] 1994 U.S. senatorial campaignMain article: United States Senate election in Massachusetts, 1994 Romney had been thinking about entering politics for a while.[32] He decided to take on longtime incumbent Democratic Senator Ted Kennedy, who was more vulnerable than usual in 1994 – in part because of the unpopularity of the Democratic Congress as a whole and also because this was Kennedy's first election since the William Kennedy Smith trial in Florida, in which Kennedy had taken some public relations hits regarding his character.[68][69][70] Romney changed his affiliation from Independent to Republican in October 1993 and formally announced his candidacy in February 1994.[32] He stepped down from his position at Bain Capital, and from his church leadership role, during the run.[9][65] Romney came from behind to win the Massachusetts Republican Party's nomination for U.S. Senate after buying substantial television time to get out his message and gaining overwhelming support in the state party convention.[71] He then defeated businessman John Lakian in the September 1994 primary with over 80 percent of the vote.[9][72] In the general election, Kennedy faced the first serious re-election challenger of his career in the young, telegenic, and very well-funded Romney.[68] Romney ran as a fresh face, as a successful entrepreneur who stated he had created ten thousand jobs, and as a Washington outsider with a strong family image and moderate stands on social issues.[68][73] When Kennedy tried to tie Romney's policies to those of Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush, Romney responded, "Look, I was an independent during the time of Reagan-Bush. I'm not trying to take us back to Reagan-Bush."[74] Romney stated: "Ultimately, this is a campaign about change."[75] After two decades out of public view, his father George re-emerged during the campaign as well.[76][77] Romney's campaign was effective in portraying Kennedy as soft on crime, but had trouble establishing its own positions in a consistent manner.[78] By mid-September 1994, polls showed the race to be approximately even.[68][79][80] Kennedy responded with a series of attack ads, which focused both on Romney's seemingly shifting political views on issues such as abortion and on the treatment of workers at the Ampad plant owned by Romney's Bain Capital.[68][81][82] The latter was effective in blunting Romney's momentum.[51] Kennedy and Romney held a widely watched late October debate without a clear winner, but by then Kennedy had pulled ahead in polls and stayed ahead afterward.[83] Romney spent over $7 million of his own money, with Kennedy spending more than $10 million from his campaign fund, mostly in the last weeks of the campaign (this was the second-most expensive race of the 1994 election cycle, after the Dianne Feinstein–Michael Huffington Senate race in California).[84] In the November general election, despite a disastrous showing for Democrats overall, Kennedy won the election with 58 percent of the vote to Romney's 41 percent,[39] the smallest margin in Kennedy's eight re-election campaigns for the Senate. 2002 Winter Olympics Romney, who served as CEO of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, offering remarks before a curling matchRomney returned to Bain Capital the day after the election, but still smarted from the loss, and told his brother, "I never want to run for something again unless I can win."[32][85] His father died in 1995 and his mother in 1998, and Romney felt restless as the decade neared a close; the goal of just making more money was losing its appeal to him.[32][85] He no longer had a church leadership position, although he still taught Sunday School.[63] Fearing he would be a focal point for opposition, he had a limited, behind-the-scenes role in trying to ease tensions between the church and local residents during the long and controversial approval and construction process for a Mormon temple in Belmont (nevertheless, it still was sometimes referred to as "Mitt's Temple" by locals).[63][64][62][65] Ann Romney was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1998; Romney described watching her fail a series of neurological tests as the worst day of his life.[32] After two years of severe difficulties with the disease, she found in Park City, Utah (where the couple had built a vacation home) a mixture of mainstream, alternative, and equestrian therapies that gave her a lifestyle mostly without limitations.[38] When the offer came for Romney to take over the troubled 2002 Olympic Winter Games, to be held in Salt Lake City in Utah, she urged him to take it, and eager for a new challenge, he did.[85][86] On February 11, 1999, Romney was hired as the new president and CEO of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee.[87] Before Romney came on, the event was running $379 million short of its revenue benchmarks.[87] Plans were being made to scale back the games to compensate for the fiscal crisis and there were fears the games might be moved away entirely.[88] The Games had also been damaged by allegations of bribery involving top officials, including prior Salt Lake Olympic Committee president and CEO Frank Joklik. Joklik and committee vice president Dave Johnson were forced to resign.[89] Romney's appointment faced some initial criticism from non-Mormons, and fears from Mormons, that it represented cronyism or gave the games too Mormon an image.[27] Romney revamped the organization's leadership and policies, reduced budgets, and boosted fund raising. He soothed worried corporate sponsors and recruited many new ones.[85][90] He admitted past problems, listened to local critics, and rallied Utah's citizenry with a sense of optimism.[85] Romney worked to ensure the safety of the Games following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks by ignoring those who suggested the games be called off and coordinating a $300 million security budget.[86][91] He became the public face of the Olympic effort, appearing in countless photographs and news stories and even on Olympics souvenir pins.[85] Romney's omnipresence irked those who thought he was taking too much of the credit for the success, or had exaggerated the state of initial distress, or was primarily looking to improve his own image.[85][90] Overall he oversaw a $1.32 billion budget, 700 employees, and 26,000 volunteers.[87] Despite the initial fiscal shortfall, the Games ended up clearing a profit of $100 million,[92] not counting the $224.5 million in security costs contributed by outside sources.[93] Romney broke the record for most private money raised by any individual for an Olympics games, summer or winter.[86] His performance as Olympics head was rated positively by 87 percent of Utahns.[94] Romney and his wife contributed $1 million to the Olympics, and he donated to charity the $1.4 million in salary and severance payments he received for his three years as president and CEO.[95] Romney was widely praised for his successful efforts with the 2002 Winter Olympics[86] including by President George W. Bush,[18] and it solidified his reputation as a turnaround artist.[90] Harvard Business School taught a case study based around Romney's successful actions.[4] Romney wrote a book about his experience titled Turnaround: Crisis, Leadership, and the Olympic Games, published in 2004. The role gave Romney experience in dealing with federal, state, and local entities, a public persona he had previously lacked, and the chance to re-launch his political aspirations.[85] Indeed, he was mentioned as a possible candidate for statewide office in both Massachusetts and Utah, and also as possibly joining the Bush administration.[86][96][97] Governor of Massachusetts2002 gubernatorial campaignMain article: Massachusetts gubernatorial election, 2002 In 2002, Republican Acting Governor Jane Swift's administration was plagued by political missteps and personal scandals.[94] Many Republicans viewed her as a liability and considered her unable to win a general election against a Democrat.[98] Prominent GOP activists campaigned to persuade Romney to run for governor.[96] One poll taken at that time showed Republicans favoring Romney over Swift by more than 50 percentage points.[99] In March 2002, Swift decided not to seek her party's nomination, and so Romney was unopposed in the Republican party primary.[94][100] Massachusetts Democratic Party officials contested Romney's eligibility to run for governor, citing residency issues involving Romney's time in Utah as president of the Salt Lake City Olympic Committee.[101] In June 2002, the Massachusetts State Ballot Law Commission unanimously ruled that Romney was eligible to run for office.[101] Romney ran as a political outsider again,[94] saying he was "not a partisan Republican" but rather was a moderate with progressive views.[102] Supporters of Romney hailed his business record, especially his success with the 2002 Olympics, as the record of someone who would be able to bring a new era of efficiency into Massachusetts politics.[100] The campaign was the first to use microtargeting techniques, in which fine-grained groups of voters were reached with narrowly tailored messaging.[103] Romney contributed over $6 million to his own campaign during the election, a state record at the time.[94][104] Romney was elected Governor in November 2002 with 50 percent of the vote over his Democratic opponent, Massachusetts State Treasurer Shannon O'Brien, who received 45 percent.[105] Tenure, 2003–2007Main article: Governorship of Mitt Romney Romney was sworn in as the 70th governor of Massachusetts on January 2, 2003. Both houses of the Massachusetts state legislature held large Democratic majorities.[106] He picked his cabinet and advisors more on managerial abilities than partisan affiliation.[15] Upon entering office in the middle of a fiscal year, Romney faced an immediate $650 million shortfall and a projected $3 billion deficit for the next year.[97] Unexpected revenue of $1.0–1.3 billion from a previously enacted capital gains tax increase and $500 million in unanticipated federal grants decreased the deficit to $1.2–1.5 billion.[107][108] Through a combination of spending cuts, increased fees, and removal of corporate tax loopholes, by 2006 the state had a $600–700 million surplus.[97][107][109] Official Massachusetts State House portrait of Governor Mitt Romney, by artist Richard WhitneyRomney supported raising various fees by more than $300 million, including those for driver's licenses, marriage licenses, and gun licenses.[97][107] Romney increased a special gasoline retailer fee by two cents per gallon, generating about $60 million per year in additional revenue.[97][107] (Opponents said the reliance on fees sometimes imposed a hardship on those who could least afford them.[107]) Romney also closed tax loopholes that brought in another $181 million from businesses over the next two years and over $300 million for his term.[97][110] These initial loophole actions, fueled by Romney's sense of rectitude and in the face of conservative and corporate critics that considered them tax increases, won plaudits from legislators as an example of political courage.[110] The state legislature, with Romney's support, also cut spending by $1.6 billion, including $700 million in reductions in state aid to cities and towns.[111] The cuts also included a $140 million reduction in state funding for higher education, which led state-run colleges and universities to increase tuition by 63 percent over four years.[97][107] Romney sought additional cuts in his last year as Massachusetts governor by vetoing nearly 250 items in the state budget, but all of them were overridden by the Democratic-dominated legislature.[112] The cuts in state spending put added pressure on local property taxes; the share of town and city revenues coming from property taxes rose from 49 percent to 53 percent.[97][107] The combined state and local tax burden in Massachusetts increased during Romney's governorship but still was below the national average.[97] According to the Tax Foundation, that per capita burden was 9.8 percent in 2002 (below the national average of 10.3 percent), and 10.5 percent in 2006 (below the national average of 10.8 percent).[113] Romney was at the forefront of a movement to bring near-universal health insurance coverage to the state, after Staples founder Stemberg told him at the start of his term that doing so would be the best way he could help people[114][115][116] and after the federal government, due to the rules of Medicaid funding, threatened to cut $385 million in those payments to Massachusetts if the state did not reduce the number of uninsured recipients of health care services.[15][114][117] Despite not having campaigned on the idea of universal health insurance,[116] Romney decided that because people without insurance still received expensive health care, the money spent by the state for such care could be better used to subsidize insurance for the poor.[115][116] After positing that any measure adopted not raise taxes and not resemble the previous decade's failed "Hillarycare" proposal, Romney formed a team of consultants from different political backgrounds that beginning in late 2004 came up with a set of innovative proposals more ambitious than an incremental one from the Massachusetts Senate and more acceptable to him than one from the Massachusetts House of Representatives that incorporated a new payroll tax.[15][114][117] In particular, Romney successfully pushed for incorporating an individual mandate at the state level.[7] Past rival Ted Kennedy, who had made universal heath coverage his life's work and who over time developed a warm relationship with Romney,[118] gave Romney's plan a positive reception, which encouraged Democratic legislators to work with it.[114][117] The effort eventually gained the support of all major stakeholders within the state, and Romney helped break a logjam between rival Democratic leaders in the legislature.[114][117] On April 12, 2006, Romney signed the resulting Massachusetts health reform law, which requires nearly all Massachusetts residents to buy health insurance coverage or face escalating tax penalties such as the loss of their personal income tax exemption.[119] The bill also establishes means-tested state subsidies for people who do not have adequate employer insurance and who make below an income threshold, by using funds previously designated to compensate for the health costs of the uninsured.[120][121][122] He vetoed eight sections of the health care legislation, including a controversial $295-per-employee assessment on businesses that do not offer health insurance and provisions guaranteeing dental benefits to Medicaid recipients.[119][123] The legislature overrode all eight vetoes; Romney's communications director Eric Fehrnstrom responded by saying, "These differences with the Legislature are not essential to the goal of getting everyone covered with insurance."[123] Romney said of the measure overall, "There really wasn't Republican or Democrat in this. People ask me if this is conservative or liberal, and my answer is yes. It's liberal in the sense that we're getting our citizens health insurance. It's conservative in that we're not getting a government takeover."[114] The law was the first of its kind in the nation and became the signature achievement of Romney's term in office.[117][nb 7] At the beginning of his governorship, Romney opposed same-sex marriage and civil unions, but advocated tolerance and supported some domestic partnership benefits.[117][125][126] Faced with the dilemma of choosing between same-sex marriage or civil unions after the November 2003 Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court decision legalizing same-sex marriages (Goodridge v. Department of Public Health), Romney reluctantly backed a state constitutional amendment in February 2004 that would have banned same-sex marriage but still allow civil unions, viewing it as the only feasible way to ban same-sex marriage in Massachusetts.[127] In May 2004 Romney instructed town clerks to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, but citing a 1913 law that barred out-of-state residents from getting married in Massachusetts if their union would be illegal in their home state, no marriage licenses were to be issued to out-of-state same-sex couples not planning to move to Massachusetts.[125][128] In June 2005, Romney abandoned his support for the compromise amendment, stating that the amendment confused voters who oppose both same-sex marriage and civil unions.[125] Instead, Romney endorsed a petition effort led by the Coalition for Marriage & Family that would have banned same-sex marriage and made no provisions for civil unions.[125] In 2004 and 2006 he urged the U.S. Senate to vote in favor of the Federal Marriage Amendment.[129][130] In 2005, Romney revealed a change of view regarding abortion, moving from an "unequivocal" pro-choice position expressed during his 2002 campaign to a pro-life one where he opposed Roe v. Wade. [117] He vetoed a bill on pro-life grounds that would expand access to emergency contraception in hospitals and pharmacies[131] (the veto was overridden by the legislature).[132] Romney generally used the bully pulpit approach towards promoting his agenda, staging well-organized media events to appeal directly to the public rather than pushing his proposals in behind-doors sessions with the state legislature.[117] Romney was especially effective in dealing with a crisis of confidence in Boston's Big Dig project following a fatal ceiling collapse in 2006, wresting control of the project from the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority and helping ensure that it would eventually complete.[117] During 2004, Romney spent considerable effort trying to bolster the state Republican Party, but it failed to gain any seats in the state legislative elections that year.[97][133] Given a prime-time appearance at the 2004 Republican National Convention, Romney was already being discussed as a potential 2008 presidential candidate.[134] Midway through his term, Romney decided that he wanted to stage a full-time run for president,[135] and on December 14, 2005, Romney announced that he would not seek re-election for a second term as governor.[136][137] As chair of the Republican Governors Association, Romney traveled around the country, meeting prominent Republicans and building a national political network;[135] he spent part or all of more than 200 days out of state during 2006, preparing for his run.[138] Romney's frequent out-of-state travel contributed towards his approval rating declining in public polls towards the end of his term.[139] He conceded that 2006 would be a difficult year for Republicans and that they would likely lose gubernatorial seats, including possibly his own.[139] The weak condition of the Republican state party was one of several factors that led to Democrat Deval Patrick's lopsided win over Republican Kerry Healey in the 2006 Massachusetts gubernatorial election.[139] Romney filed to register a presidential campaign committee with the Federal Election Commission on his penultimate day in office as governor.[140] Romney's term ended January 4, 2007. 2008 presidential campaignMain article: Mitt Romney presidential campaign, 2008 See also: Republican Party (United States) presidential primaries, 2008 Romney holding an Dearborn, Michigan.[141] In his speech, Romney frequently invoked his father and his own family and stressed experiences in the private, public, and voluntary sectors that had brought him to this point.[141][142] He said, "Throughout my life, I have pursued innovation and transformation,"[142] and casting himself as a political outsider, said, "I do not believe Washington can be transformed from within by a lifelong politician."[143] The assets that Romney's campaign began with included his résumé of success in the business world and his rescuing of the Salt Lake Olympics,[135][144] which matched the commonly held notion that American industry had star players who could straighten out what was wrong in the nation's capital.[145] Romney also had solid political experience as governor together with a political pedigree courtesy of his father, a strong work ethic and energy level, and a large, wholesome-looking family that seemed so perfect as to be off-putting to some voters.[135][144][146] Ann Romney, who had become an outspoken advocate for those with multiple sclerosis,[147] was in remission and would be an active participant in his campaign,[148] helping to soften his political personality.[146] Moreover, with his square jaw, handsome face, and ample hair graying at the temples, Mitt Romney matched one of the common images of what a president should look like.[48][109][149][150] Romney's liabilities included having run for senator and served as governor in one of the nation's most liberal states, having taken some positions there that were opposed by the party's conservative base, and subsequently shifting those positions.[135][144][148] The candidate's Mormon religion was also viewed with suspicion and skepticism by some in the Evangelical portion of the party.[151] Romneys on Mackinac Island at the 2007 Republican ConventionRomney assembled for his campaign a veteran group of Republican staffers, consultants, and pollsters.[144][152] He was little-known nationally, though, and stayed around the ten percent range in Republican preference polls for the first half of 2007.[135] Romney's strategy was to win the first two big contests, the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary, and carry the momentum and visibility gained through the big Super Tuesday primaries and on to the nomination.[152] He proved the most effective fundraiser of any of the Republican candidates,[153] with his Olympics ties helping him with fundraising from Utah residents and from sponsors and trustees of the games.[95] He also partly financed his campaign with his own personal fortune.[144] These resources, combined with his August 2007 win in the Iowa Straw Poll and the mid-year near-collapse of nominal front-runner John McCain's campaign, made Romney a threat to win the nomination and the focus of the other candidates' attacks.[154] Romney's staff suffered from internal strife and the candidate himself was indecisive at times, constantly asking for more data before making a decision.[144][155] During all of his political campaigns, Romney has generally avoided speaking publicly about specific Mormon doctrines, referring to the U.S. Constitution prohibition of religious tests for public office.[156] But persistent questions about the role of religion in Romney's life in this race, as well as Southern Baptist minister and former Governor of Arkansas Mike Huckabee's rise in the polls based upon an explicitly Christian-themed campaign, led to the December 6, 2007, "Faith in America" speech.[157] Introduced by former President George H. W. Bush, Romney discussed the role of religion in American society and politics. Romney said he should neither be elected nor rejected based upon his religion,[158] and echoed Senator John F. Kennedy's famous speech during his 1960 presidential campaign in saying "I will put no doctrine of any church above the plain duties of the office and the sovereign authority of the law."[157] Instead of discussing the specific tenets of his faith, he said that he would be informed by it and that, "Freedom requires religion just as religion requires freedom. Freedom and religion endure together, or perish alone."[157][158] Academics would later study the role religion had played in the campaign.[nb 8] In the January 3, 2008, Iowa Republican caucuses, the first contest of the primary season, Romney received 25 percent of the vote and placed second to the vastly outspent Huckabee, who received 34 percent.[161][162] Of the 60 percent of caucus-goers who were evangelical Christians, Huckabee was supported by about half of them while Romney by only a fifth.[161] A couple of days later, Romney won the lightly contested Wyoming Republican caucuses.[163] Mitt and Ann Romney in late December 2007 at a campaign event in Londonderry, New HampshireAt a Saint Anselm College debate, Huckabee and McCain pounded away at Romney's image as a flip flopper.[161] Indeed, this label would stick to Romney through the campaign[144] (but was one that Romney rejected as unfair and inaccurate, except for his acknowledged change of mind on abortion).[146] Romney seemed to approach the campaign as a management consulting exercise, and showed a lack of personal warmth and political feel; journalist Evan Thomas wrote that Romney "came off as a phony, even when he was perfectly sincere."[146][164] Romney's staff would conclude that competing as a candidate of social conservatism and ideological purity rather than of pragmatic competence had been a mistake.[146][165] Romney finished in second place by five percentage points to the resurgent McCain in the next-door-to-his-home-state New Hampshire primary on January 8.[161] Romney rebounded to win the January 15 Michigan primary over McCain by a solid margin, capitalizing on his childhood ties to the state and his vow to bring back lost automotive industry jobs which was seen by several commentators as unrealistic.[nb 9] On January 19, Romney won the lightly contested Nevada caucuses, but placed fourth in the intense South Carolina primary, where he had effectively ceded the contest to his rivals.[170] McCain gained further momentum with his win in South Carolina, leading to a showdown between him and Romney in the Florida primary.[171][172] For ten days, Romney campaigned intensively on economic issues and the burgeoning subprime mortgage crisis, while McCain repeatedly and inaccurately asserted that Romney favored a premature withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq.[nb 10] McCain won key last-minute endorsements from Florida Senator Mel Martinez and Governor Charlie Crist, which helped push him to a five percentage point victory on January 29.[171][172] Although many Republican officials were now lining up behind McCain,[172] Romney persisted through the nationwide Super Tuesday contests on February 5. There he won primaries or caucuses in several states, including Massachusetts, Alaska, Minnesota, Colorado and Utah, but McCain won more, including large states such as California and New York.[174] Trailing McCain in delegates by a more than two-to-one margin, Romney announced the end of his campaign on February 7 during a speech before the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington.[174] Romney at a rally in Battle Creek, Michigan, in mid-January 2008Altogether, Romney had won 11 primaries and caucuses,[175] received about 4.7 million total votes,[176] and garnered about 280 delegates.[177] Romney spent $110 million during the campaign, including $45 million of his own money.[178] Romney endorsed McCain for president a week later.[177] He soon founded the Free and Strong America PAC, a political action committee whose stated mission was to raise money for other Republican candidates and to promote Republican policies.[179] Romney became one of the McCain campaign's most visible surrogates, appearing on behalf of the GOP nominee at fundraisers, state Republican party conventions, and on cable news programs.[180] His efforts earned McCain's respect and the two developed a warmer relationship; he was on the nominee's short list for the vice presidential running mate slot, where his experience in matters economic would have balanced one of McCain's weaknesses.[181] McCain, behind in the polls, opted instead for a high-risk, high-reward "game changer" and selected Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.[182] Romney continued to work for McCain's eventually unsuccessful general election campaign.

Daniel D. Portado sends “Cease and Desist” notice to SelfDeport.org: “I Invented Self-Deportation” Posted: January 27, 2012 | Author: Patriots for Self-Deportation | Filed under: Blog |Leave a comment » Patriots: We have just received a Cease and Desist notice from Radical right wing Mexican-American activist Daniel D. Portado, founder of HALTO (Hispanics Against Liberal Takeover), citing his exclusive copyright on the term Self-Deportation. “Daniel D. Portado invented Self Deportation in 1994,” he wrote, “when your hip accessories were wet diapers and a chupon!” We are not sure what a “chuppon” is (is it like a Clap-On/Clap-Off?), but Mr. D. Portado seems very serious indeed. Although his concept of Self Deportation applied, like Mitt Romney’s, to Hispanic immigrants only, he is outraged, saying: “Mojados take everything, but not Daniel’s wonderful ideas. SELF-DEPORTATION is mine! Now DEPORT YOURSELF!” Luckily for us, that’s the idea. Here’s an excerpt of a 1996 episode of This American Life that featured Mr. D. Portado: Man:Hey, Pedro. Go back to Mexico, stop taking our jobs, and stop looking at my daughter! Daniel D. Portado: Immigrants, are you tired of being pushed around in America? Well, don’t sit on your serape. Do something about it. Join the conservative political action group HALTO– Hispanics Against Liberal Takeover. Announcer 1: HALTO was formed by Mexicali karaoke lounge sensation Daniel D. Portado as a way to spread California Governor Pete Wilson’s message of self-deportation to a national audience. Daniel D. Portado: I am the chairman of HALTO, Daniel D. Portado. What is self-deportation, you ask? Think of it as a permanent vacation. Just imagine, in one easy step, you can avoid all this crazy anti-immigrant harassment in America. How? Self-deportation. Just imagine yourself on the beach, in Mazatlan, relaxed, tension-free. Immigrants, join HALTO today and see your homeland tomorrow. Announcer 1: Self-deportation is a trademark of Hispanics Against Liberal Takeover. Subject agrees to voluntarily repatriate to native land or Mexico, whichever is nearest. All self-deportations are final. No exchanges or refunds. Tickets are one way only. And here is an interview he gave recently: “Daniel D.   Google us for details Cantil, CA 51 min ago American Land Trust Inc Facebook Page/Stan Krol Land speculators see silver lining in solar projects Remote, inhospitable desert land gains new value as developers seek sites for renewable energy. Industry observers caution that not every owner is going to make a fortune. Graphic: Land ownership in the Mojave Desert Region Problems cast shadows of doubt on solar project Wind power blowing up in California New DOE maps show wind energy potential in U.S. Julie Cart, Los Angeles Times February 18, 2012 Reporting from Ripley, Calif.— For Sale: 3,400 acres in the desert. • No paved roads. Check. • Isolated. Ideal. • Land not suitable for farming. Perfect. • Blistering sunshine. Jackpot. • Asking price:$34 million. Deal. As large-scale solar development has spooled out into Southwestern deserts, the modern-day gold rush is about more than renewable energy. Solar companies and land speculators are gobbling up scarce private land in the California deserts, driving prices up 10- to 20-fold, or even higher. Desolate acreage that a few years ago might have sold for less than $500 an acre can now fetch as much as $20,000 an acre, according to land brokers in the region. Farmers are also getting in on the action. Alfalfa and cotton fields are being converted to solar and wind farms as the industry's big players put together mega-deals. "It's mind-boggling what's happening," said Jean Laborde of Bakersfield, a former farmer who has been selling agricultural land in the Mojave and adjacent Colorado deserts for 45 years. Laborde has made a killing lately. About 10 years ago, one of his clients listed 750 barren acres near the town of Mojave, but Laborde couldn't sell it. He finally bought the land himself for $350 an acre. "There's no water, the wind blows all the time," he said. "Everyone said this was a Godforsaken place." Laborde held on to the property, then sold it a few years ago to someone who intended to build a solar power plant. Laborde won't disclose what the developer paid, but the price today would be $10,000 an acre, he said. "Turned out to be the best deal I ever made." Real estate specialists warn that not all desert landowners will enjoy a similar payday, but try telling that to old-timers who hear about deals that have turned farmers into millionaires. A recent example is the family of alfalfa growers in Gila Bend, Ariz., who sold 3,000 acres of cropland to a consortium of investors, who then sold the land to Spanish solar giant Abengoa for $45 million. Earlier this year Ari Swiller, who heads aLos Angeles-based renewable energy company, quietly gathered up 11,000 acres near Blythe — the largest aggregation of separate parcels the Riverside County assessor's office has seen in 15 years. Although the property hasn't been resold, Riverside County Assessor Larry W. Ward said land in the area that typically sells in "the low hundreds" per acre is now going for $2,000 to $3,000 an acre. Solar companies are reluctant to speak publicly about land prices, partly out of fear that they will inflame an already overheated market. Developers try to fly beneath the real estate radar, often buying contiguous parcels under different names or through third parties to avoid igniting a land rush. Most hire brokers or land scouts who bump along dirt roads trolling for cheap land. They, too, operate quietly and seldom disclose whom they represent.   Malibu Oceanfront Investing said... March 09, 2012 @ 9:42:33 PM EST Real Estate News & Commentary by Stan Krol Entrepreneur, March 9th, 2012. Foreclosures reached a high in February, the last month data was available, when 4,169 high–end homes were somewhere in the foreclosure process; having received a foreclosure notice, had an auction scheduled or had ownership taken over by the lender. That’s a 121% increase from a year ago. The deterioration comes just as housing experts say that foreclosures in the low and middle ends of the housing market are showing signs of stabilization. Heated pools, ocean views and media rooms are not what most people would expect to find in a foreclosed property, but more high–end homes – priced at more than a million dollars – have been falling into the hands of banks this year. Foreclosures of homes worth more than $1 million began increasing at the end of 2011, according to data provided to CNBC.com by foreclosure tracking website RealtyTrac. Owners of expensive homes "were able to stave off foreclosure longer," says independent real estate analyst Jack McCabe, CEO of McCabe Research and Consulting in South Florida. "Lower–end homeowners were the first ones to see the escalating foreclosures, because they generally do not have the cash reserves or credit available that the luxury homeowners do." They had the ability to take their credit cards and pull out thousands of dollars, while the lower–end buyers were already tapped out. Data show that may be the case around the country. The 90–day delinquency rate on home loans worth more than a million dollars hit a high in February at 13.3%, above the overall rate of 8.6%, according to real estate data firm First American CoreLogic. Foreclosure proceedings generally start after a homeowner has been at least 90 days late on a mortgage payment, experts say. One difference in the high–end market is that lenders are willing to do more to head off foreclosure by renegotiating the loan or accepting a short-sale transaction, which is essentially a last–ditch effort. "Lenders are far more likely to go the short–sale route," says Andrew LePage, an analyst at real estate research firm DataQuick. "There’s a lot more money at stake, and maintenance can be high if a foreclosure just sits there." A $1.15 million condominium in Chicago in the landmark Palmolive Building was initially offered as a short sale, but after a buyer did not materialize, it’s now owned by the bank, says Janice Corley, founder of Sudler Sotheby’s International Realty, which is currently listing it. The condo has lake views and a long list of luxury–building amenities, including a steam room, doorman and gym. . The rise in luxury foreclosures has one Las Vegas real estate agent flying prospective buyers into the city via private jet. Luxury Homes of Las Vegas and JetSuite Air teamed to offer the complimentary trip for buyers flying from Los Angeles to view three foreclosed homes priced between $4.9 million and $6.1 million Agent Ken Lowman says he gave three tours over a one–week period and hopes to expand the offer to buyers from other West Coast cities. There’s just too much competition, Lowman says. "It takes an innovative approach like this to get results." ========================================= What does this mean for you?   Timeshare contracts are a necessary evil when you purchase one of these properties, but they also cause a lot of problems for owners who don’t entirely realize what they are getting into. Timeshares can get very expensive to have, even if they were very affordable when you bought into it. They also can potentially be with you for the rest of your life if you don’t pay extra attention to what they say. So when you find yourself in a position to want to get out of your timeshare contract, where can you turn for help? Who Can Help If you find yourself needing or wanting to get rid of your timeshare and no longer have to worry about the stresses these properties can bring with them, you have a few options when it comes to who can help you out. ?Timeshare Developers – The first person you should talk to is your developer. Some owners would be shocked to learn that they may be able to take the timeshare back from you with little hassle. ?Timeshare Resale Consultants – These timeshare experts know all the ways you can get rid of your timeshare. Based on your needs and situation, they will be able to recommend the best way to get out of your timeshare contract. Some of these consultations may even be free, so take your time and find a good and trustworthy consultant. ?Timeshare Resale Companies – If you decide to sell your timeshare and don’t feel like dealing with the stresses on your own, timeshare resale companies will be able to help you sell your timeshare without any work on your part. ?Real Estate Lawyers – If you are just looking for some advice or are curious about the details of your timeshare contract, a real estate lawyer should be able to help you out. As legal pieces of real estate, a lawyer that specializes in this will be particularly helpful in assisting with your needs. What You Can Do You actually have quite a few options when it comes to how to get out of your timeshare contract and say goodbye to your burdensome timeshare once and for all. Take some time to research your options and don’t be afraid to ask questions. More people than ever are trying to get rid of their timeshares, so you certainly aren’t alone. Explore your options, ask for help when needed, and you will be rid of your timeshare contract in no time. Filed Under: Blog Finding an Heir for Your Timeshare Contracts April 2, 2012 Leave a Comment When you sign a timeshare contract, you may assume that it isn’t something that will be tied to you forever. In some cases, such as right-to-use timeshares that have an expiration date, this is absolutely true. But for many other timeshares they are something that will be with you for life, and something you have to take into consideration when you are gone. Finding an Heir Deeded timeshares are legal pieces of real estate even though you don’t own the entire property. And like other pieces of property, like houses, someone needs to take responsibility of it when the owner passes away. This may be a very morbid thought, but as a timeshare owner, no matter how old you are or what condition your health is in, it is a very real one you have to take into consideration. When thinking of an heir for your timeshare there are a few things you need to keep in mind. Can the person you are willing your timeshare to afford to keep the property? Timeshares often tend to get more expensive to keep the longer you have them, so in order to avoid financial trouble that may lead to foreclosure on the property it is important to give it to someone who can afford to keep it. Also think about whether or not it is important to keep it in the family and if the person or family you are giving it to will even be able to use it. What You Can Do As you can see, being a timeshare owner is far more complicated than just enjoying a week away every year. Who would have thought when they purchased the property that they would need to think about all these things? However, there are ways to get out of your timeshare contract and not even have to worry about this. If you no longer want your timeshare or don’t want to deal with the stresses that come with owning these properties, you just have to get rid of it. Easier said than done, since getting rid of a timeshare can be notoriously complicated for an inexperienced owner. But there are people out there who can help. Reputable timeshare resale companies (and even free timeshare consulting services) can help you figure out your options, such as selling, donating, or maybe even returning the timeshare to the developer, and determine the best way to get rid of your timeshare once and for all well before you even have to worry about finding an heir for your property. Filed Under: Blog How to Break a Timeshare Contract April 1, 2012 Leave a Comment Despite the joy that owning a timeshare can bring, many owners at some point begin to wonder who to break their timeshare contract. This can be for a variety of reasons, including financial hardship, declined use, unhappiness with a poorly managed timeshare HOA, changes to the family, or increased travel costs. The reasons are many, but unfortunately your options for getting out of your timeshare are fairly limited in scope. Your Options Generally speaking, you only have two options when it comes to how you can break your timeshare contract – give it back to your developer or give it to someone else. Most timeshare agreements, even if you have temporary ownership through a right-to-use timeshare, are your responsibility while the property is in your name. This means the only way to avoid having to keep up with your end of the timeshare bargain, you have to get the property out of your name and into someone else’s. There are a couple ways you can accomplish this. ?Timeshare Giveback – Some timeshare developers will allow you to pay to essentially “restock” your share in the property to allow them to sell it to someone else. The fees for this can vary widely depending on your property and not all developers offer this option, so you will have to double check your contract or contact your manager for more information. ?Donation – A lot of people like this option because it is fairly inexpensive, you feel like you are helping a good cause, and you can potentially get a hefty tax deduction for your donation. Unfortunately, not all timeshares are eligible for donation and not all charities will accept these properties as the cost of ownership often outweighs the perks of any fundraising they would be able to accomplish. ?Selling – By far the most popular option, more and more people each year are selling their timeshares. However, the word “selling” can be misleading, as you will often spend money that you would receive in order to get rid of these properties. Essentially, you are paying to get rid of your property, which is still often cheaper than what your timeshare will cost you to keep over the course of a year anyway. ?Gifting – As nice as this may sound, who really wants to get a timeshare as a present? However, if you are able to find someone who will take your timeshare off your hands (and maybe even pay the transfer fees) this is by far the most affordable and easy way to break a timeshare contract. What You Can Do The best way to find out which options works best for you is to consult with a timeshare resale specialists about what will work best for your unique needs. There are a variety of places that offer free consultations to help get you on your way, and can even help you find reputable resale professionals who can help you break your timeshare contract and get rid of your property once and for all. Filed Under: Blog Common Problems People Have with Their Timeshare Contracts March 31, 2012 Leave a Comment Even people with years of real estate experience can get tripped up by timeshare contracts. They are some of the most confusing properties to own, and even as legal pieces of real estate may follow their own rules based on the terms of their timeshare contracts. So it is no wonder that many timeshare owners often find themselves confused with these properties and the tricky contracts that come with them. But don’t be discouraged – you certainly aren’t alone. More people than ever are looking into the terms of their timeshare contracts and finding themselves confused with what they can and can’t do with their properties. Common Issues Some of the most common problems that people report when looking into the terms of their timeshare contracts include: ?Ownership rights – You would think that as real estate you would have the same rights to these properties as you would a house. But since you only own a small portion of the property your ownership rights may be pretty limited. You are only allowed to use the timeshare during your designated time period, and the number of people allowed to stay in the unit may be strictly limited. ?Exchange policies – In order to sell a property a sales representative may tell you anything you want to hear even if it isn’t true. A common misconception is that if you can’t use your timeshare during your designated time that you can exchange for another unit at another time, or even different location. However, many developers and resorts don’t allow this unless you are part of a separate exchange program, which can be purchased in addition to your timeshare. ?Timeshare giveback – Some owners think that if they are ever unable to continue to use their property you can just return it to the resort. In some cases this may be true (for a fee of course) but not all developers offer this option, so it is important to know beforehand whether or not you can return your timeshare. ?Length of contract – Some timeshare contracts have an expiration date (such as right-to-use timeshares) but many are properties you will have for life. Make sure you are aware of the length of your contract to prevent any confusion later on. ?Sales restrictions – For people who can no longer keep their timeshares and can’t return the property to the developer, selling or giving away the timeshare is the only option to get the contract out of your name. However, different resorts have different restrictions on this, so to avoid a lengthy sales process you should know what these are in advance. Timeshares can be great ways for families to spend time together each year at a favorite location, but they can also be a big headache for owners who are not completely aware of what they are getting into. Make sure you know all the details of your timeshare contract before you make any agreements and you can save yourself a lot of trouble down the road. Filed Under: Blog

.. New England's lack of violence reaps economic benefits By Scott Malone | Reuters – 14 hrs ago... . fyi faq contant Stan Krol Email for Timeshares rentals in ME,NH,VT,MA,RI,CT 1 Print ... . . . BOSTON (Reuters) - The rural New England states of Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire are the most peaceful U.S. states, a distinction that gives them an economic advantage over the most violent, including Louisiana, Tennessee and Nevada. Violence and its aftermath cost the entire U.S. economy some $460 billion last year, according to the Institute for Economics and Peace's second annual United States Peace Index, which was released on Tuesday. The study found that the United States has become a less violent place over the past two decades, based on an analysis of historic data on homicides and other violent crime, the number of people incarcerated, police employment and the prevalence of small arms. While the United States continues to be rocked by highly publicized cases of gun violence - from the February shooting of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Florida to an April shooting spree in Tulsa, Oklahoma by two men that left three people dead and four wounded - the overall homicide rate has declined, the study found. "You have a really established trend of improving peacefulness in the United States," said Steve Killelea, an Australian entrepreneur who serves as executive chairman of the institute, which also produces an annual Global Peace Index, which tracks relative peacefulness of countries. Over that time two of the most populous states - New York and California - recorded the largest drops in violence, a trend that reflects decades of focus on fighting urban crime, Killelea said. "Certainly if one sees there is a problem and takes a concerted action to solve the problem, you are much more likely to see results," Killelea said. COSTS VARY WIDELY The most violent states pick up far more of the nation's overall $460 billion tab for violent crime than their peaceful neighbors. The cost estimates for 2011 cover a range of expenses - from the direct costs of medical treatment for victims and incarceration of those convicted of violence, to lost productivity. A state's relative size also has an influence on how much its economy loses to violence. Vermont, which was ranked as the second least-violent state and also has the second-lowest population, took the smallest economic hit from violence at $446.7 million. California, which was ranked middle of the pack at 32nd most peaceful, had the highest economic toll from violence at $63.03 billion. That reflected its enormous size - it is the most populous U.S. state, home to roughly one of eight Americans. The group for the first time evaluated the 50 largest metropolitan statistical areas. It found that the most peaceful were Cambridge, Newton and Framingham, Massachusetts - all outside Boston; Edison and New Brunswick, New Jersey, and Seattle, Bellevue and Everett, Washington. The most violent metropolitan areas were Detroit, Livonia and Dearborn in Michigan; New Orleans, Metairie and Kennery in Louisiana, and Miami, Miami Beach and Kendall in Florida. In addition to lower costs, less violent states measure well on other social outcomes, with healthier, better educated and more engaged citizens, the study found.
